Why this drill works

The shoulders must always rotate perpendicular to the spine angle to maintain proper posture and the swing plane. A flat turn (shoulders parallel to the ground) destabilizes the spine and forces the club out of position, requiring timing-dependent compensations.

How to do it

  1. 1

Place a golf club across your chest, resting on your shoulder sockets (butt end on the left shoulder, sticking out).

  2. 2

Backswing Check: The club should point down toward the ground, slightly outside the ball, not parallel to the ground.

  3. 3

Visualize the 'T': Maintain the 'T' shape formed by your spine and shoulders; your shoulders must rotate perpendicular to the spine angle.

  4. 4

Feel: Focus on the sensation of your left shoulder pointing down toward the ground.

  5. 5

Use a mirror to visually confirm the perpendicular rotation.
