Why this drill works

An outside takeaway traces back to the very first move: if the arms disconnect and push the club outside the hands-feet line early, the rest of the swing is forced to compensate, so training this checkpoint keeps energy delivered into the ball more efficiently.

How to do it

  1. 1

Take your address and start the club back low, checking that the clubshaft and hands stay in line with your feet rather than drifting outside them.

  2. 2

Feel your upper arms stay connected to your chest so the arms and torso move away together instead of the arms lifting and pushing the club outside on their own.

  3. 3

Check the clubface stays square to your spine angle, not twisted open, as you reach the first checkpoint about hip-high in the takeaway.

  4. 4

Rehearse this checkpoint slowly a few times, then blend it into a normal-speed takeaway before hitting balls.
