Why this drill works

Keeping a headcover pinned under the lead armpit gives instant feedback when the arms separate from the torso; training the chest and core to initiate the takeaway keeps the club connected and on a better path away from the ball instead of the arms pushing it outside.

How to do it

  1. 1

Tuck a headcover, or a glove, snugly under your lead armpit at address.

  2. 2

Make slow half-swings, keeping the headcover trapped in place as you start the club away with chest and torso rotation rather than your arms.

  3. 3

If the headcover drops during the takeaway, the lead arm has disconnected and pushed the club away from the body early: reset and repeat.

  4. 4

Gradually build from half-swings to fuller swings while keeping the headcover in place through the takeaway.
