Why this drill works

Dipping or dropping the head in the backswing is often caused by a lack of extension in the trail side. The 'reaching for the ceiling fan' motion forces the spine to extend, turn, and tilt simultaneously, promoting a higher trail hip. This lengthening creates room for a full backswing and keeps the head relatively stable, preventing the swing from becoming cramped and steep.

How to do it

  1. 1

Hold the club with your lead hand (left hand for a right-handed golfer) (2:58).

  2. 2

Reach your trail hand behind you as if you're trying to touch a light bulb on a ceiling fan, keeping your eye on the ball (3:04, 4:46).

  3. 3

Feel the body extend and the trail hip get higher; this is the key to a proper backswing (3:11, 3:25).

  4. 4

Practice this motion a few times with just your lead hand.

  5. 5

Grab the club with both hands and try to replicate the feeling in your full swing without stopping or pausing (4:59).
