Why this drill works

This two-stick system provides visual and tactile checkpoints. The stick on the hip ensures the one-piece takeaway (connection), and the tracing action ensures the club stays on the proper plane throughout the backswing and returns to the slot on the downswing.

How to do it

  1. 1

Setup: Place one stick on the ground as a target line extension. Attach a second stick to the underside of your club grip and position it against your lead hip.

  2. 2

Halfway Check: Begin the backswing; the club shaft should be parallel to the ground, and the attached stick must still be pressed against your lead hip (prevents rolling inside/lifting).

  3. 3

Top Check: Continue to the top. The attached stick should point down, tracing the line of the stick on the ground.

  4. 4

Downswing: Bring the club down so the shaft matches the stick on the ground again at the parallel position, before impact.
