Why this drill works

Excessive lateral slide destabilizes the upper body and shifts the low point. Using the stick as a constraint forces the pelvis and torso to rotate (spin) open rather than sliding laterally towards the target.

How to do it

  1. 1

Method 1 (Shin): Place an alignment stick just outside your lead shin, digging it into the ground.

  2. 2

Try to keep your right leg on the stick throughout the swing, preventing yourself from drifting off it.

  3. 3

Method 2 (Heel): Place the alignment stick a few inches outside your lead heel.

  4. 4

As you swing, try to avoid the stick by spinning your ribs and upper torso out of its way.

  5. 5

Both methods block lateral slide and force the body to rotate.
