Why this drill works

Shanks are often caused by the clubhead moving horizontally away from the body (often due to a closed clubface, not an open one). By placing the head cover as a constraint, the golfer is forced to pull the club and hands closer to the body. Addressing the ball on the toe and swinging 'inside-out' reinforces a path that avoids the hosel and achieves centered contact.

How to do it

  1. 1

Place a head cover on the ground right next to the ball, ensuring the toe of your club is almost touching the head cover (1:09-1:47).

  2. 2

Address the ball on the toe by positioning your club slightly on the toe at address.

  3. 3

Swing with an 'inside-out' feeling (swinging outwards).

  4. 4

Focus on the sensation that you are hitting the inside of the ball.
