Why this drill works

Overswing is usually an arm-runoff problem, not a lack-of-speed problem. Shortening the top improves structure, makes transition simpler, and removes the need for timing-heavy rerouting on the downswing.

How to do it

  1. 1

Make rehearsal backswings that stop the moment your shoulder turn finishes instead of letting the arms continue traveling.

  2. 2

Pause at the top and confirm the hands feel supported by the turn rather than floating behind your head.

  3. 3

Hit three-quarter shots while holding the finish so speed comes from sequence, not extra backswing length.

  4. 4

Gradually add speed only if the shorter top position stays intact for three swings in a row.

  5. 5

If the club starts to cross the line again, return to rehearsal reps before the next ball.
